The Azle Arts Association began in 1998 when a group of local theatre buffs banded together to form the Azle Arts Association
and called themselves The Popcorn Players. Their first order of business was to find a meeting location. That was accomplished
in a small, old house just off of Hwy. 199 as you entered Azle. They used the adjacent land to put on their first performance,
a melodrama entitled "Dr. Deveroix and his Dastardly Deeds." The performances were done on an outside stage in the summer evenings. The melodrama
was a smashing success, and the ground work had been laid. The group made it their mission to promote the cultural arts in
Azle.
The Arts Association found a
temporary home in the Old Lester's Pharmacy which is now owned by Harris Methodist Northwest
Hospital and was used as the Education
Building. It is here that the Popcorn Players performed their whimsical
style of plays and melodramas for the next eight years. The building was small, seating approx. 60 - 80 people depending on
the show, but gave a real sense of closeness with the audience. On top of that, the
rent was free!!
In the fall of 2006, the Association
moved to our new home. Just down the street, next door to Josephina’s Mexican restaurant was a small, unoccupied building
that was calling their names. Unfortunately, not many more seats were added, but that sense of closeness has become the group’s
“niche” thing. After months of construction, the group opened the
doors to a new era in January of 2007 by performing in our very own (however small) theatre.
It has been 10 years and counting
for the group. We have had many talented people in our group come and go. The group is proud of what it has accomplished so
far, and looks forward to what may yet be. It is our hope that you will join us for that journey. We look forward to seeing
you in the audience or having you join us onstage.
